A founding member of the Justice League, Aquaman first appeared in 1941, Aquaman is one of DC Comics longest running heroes. When Atlanna, an Atlantean Princess, is banished from the lost city of Atlantis she meets and falls in love with a lighthouse keeper. This love would lead to the birth of their son Arthur Curry. Thanks to his mother’s heritage, Arthur soon discovers he isn’t like other children, able to spend indefinite amounts of time underwater. When he reaches Adulthood, Arthur goes on a discovery to find his destiny and become the hero, Aquaman.

As well as the ability to survive underwater, Aquaman also has a host of other superpowers including superhuman reflexes and super strength; he is bulletproof, and he has the power to communicate with marine life. He also wields his trusty trident, which happens to be indestructible.

Using these powers, he has saved his new home Atlantis and the ‘surface’ world from numerous villains, the most famous of which being Black Manta and Aquaman’s half-brother Orm Marius AKA Ocean Master.

Aquaman has seen growth in popularity over recent years, thanks to new stories, character design and Jason Mamoa’s live-action portrayal.

A stand-alone Aquaman movie adaptation was released December 2018.
